Classic liners - ocean liners:
For over a century, ocean liners were the primary mode for intercontinental travel. In the 1960's they were more and more replaced by airlines as a means of intercontinental travel until luxury high-tech cruise ships came into place as a convenient and exciting way of travelling.
Ocean liners are big ships that are used to transport passengers and/or freight along regular trans oceanic routes. The primary purpose of these ships are not vacation cruises. Ocean liners don't include tramp steamers and cargo vessels or any other vessels engaged in short sea trading.
Ocean liners were usually built with high freeboards in order to withstand adverse oceanic conditions and they had large storage capacities for fuel and other goods that were consumed on voyages that lasted up to several weeks. These liners were also used to transport mail and cargo, gold and other high-value items.
