Cruise Ship Sea Handling Characteristics

Due to technical developments and advancements, ship handling and manoeuvrability has become much easier. Ship handling in rivers with strong currents is still a challenging task. The steering of the ship depends on the flow of the water over the rudder. If travelling with the current, the ship might be overtaken by the water and loose its ability to steer. In order to avoid this, sufficient speed must be maintained.

Various tools are available to help better control a ship. Some rudder designs use flaps on the edge to bend the water flow up to 90 degree to the force and aft line. Also, steerable propellers are used that allow to swivel through a complete circle. Other ships are equipped with bow and stern thrusters of enormous horsepower to improve manoeuvrability.

Pilots are also using various training tools, like computer assisted simulators to get used to ship handling under various different conditions. Some of these tools are also used on board by the bridge team in order to re-hearse certain manoeuvres.
