Cruise Ships And Waste Water Treatment

The West Coast Environment Law organization recently released a report where they stated 5 major causes that contribute to environmental damages:

* Sewage
* Hazardous waste
* Oily bilge water
* Graywater and
* Garbage

During a one week cruise, a big cruise ship is likely to dump thousands of tonnes of waste into the sea. Studies showed that an average cruise ship might produce more than 200,000 gallons of graywater per day.

The problem with graywater (from showers for example) is that it might contain pesticides and detergents causing oxygen depletion in oceanic environments. Sewage can contain formaldehydes, paint, chlor and other substances.

Bluewater Network mentioned in a report that certain contaminants in sewage are harmful to the marine environment. These substances can seep into the tissues of shellfish and create a public health risk.
